Halo Ridge and Four Pass Attempt / by Dani Perrot

A few weekends ago, we had an awesome time sleeping out of the back of the Prius and running some miles up high. We have been wanting to run Halo Ridge (and tag the top of Mt of the Holy Cross) for years, and after being foiled TWICE BEFORE by road conditions and car troubles, we managed to giterdun smoothly…It turned out to be a beautiful ridge jaunt up high with plenty of fall color. Afterward, we headed down to Aspen, sat in traffic for a while trying to get to the Maroon Bells parking lot, then ate left over pizza and waited for nightfall before setting ourselves up for another night in the back of the car. The next morning we started on the Four Pass Loop in the dark, getting to the top of the first pass (Buckskin) at sunrise…and saw a giant front to the West. Because snow was in the forecast for that night, we decided to bail, worried about getting caught out on that particular run in a snowstorm with minimal gear. Still an incredibly beautiful morning, and it only built our stoke for coming back the next weekend…
