DAY 1

January 2013 // Jackson, WY

[Dani, here.] It was close to lunch, and I had cold feet.

After standing in the tram line for a few hours that morning, waiting for my first "deep-blower-pow-pow-day" of being a "ski-bum" and then skiing a few not-so-deep laps with my buddy in super cold temps and too-small telemark boots, my toes couldn't take it anymore. I was painfully making my way down when I heard someone yelling from the chairlift, "DANI!!! DANI!!!" It was my friend Christy calling out to wait for her at the bottom of the run. Although I wanted nothing more than to get out of my boots, I stopped at the bottom, scanning the hill.

Suddenly, some random dude in bright chartreuse pants skied right up to me: "Hey! You're the snow lady!" I was like...sure? He explained he was with Christy's group, and his name was Alex. I decided I'd just join them for lunch at the top of the gondie to warm up my feet before heading all the way to the bottom and home. But when we got to lunch, Alex took off his goggles and helmet and I thought maybe I had better stick around for a bit longer.

We ended up skiing together all afternoon. I think what really struck me in those few hours of lapping Sublette and skiing sub-par snow was how he didn't take himself seriously, how he talked about his parents...how it felt like getting to know someone you've known for a long time. Even though I had set a rule for myself for no boys in Jackson, I thought maybe I could make just one exception, if he actually turned out to be cool.

Later, I found out I had gotten frostbite in both of my big toes that day. Totally worth it.
